TMJ Treatment Options
If you have TMJ, your medical and/or dental professional will decide the best treatment options for you and your individual needs. Both of you can rest assured that the MyoFree® Solution can be added as a compliment to any treatment regime with no concern about contraindications.
You may have to go through numerous tests to confirm a diagnosis of TMJ. Diagnostic procedures may include imaging studies such as x-ray, MRI, and CT scans.
Because TMJ is a complex problem, your professional caregiver may decide to give you a range of treatments, such as but not limited to:
- Bite splints are used by dental professionals to help realign the jaw for those who have bite problems and/or grind their teeth.
- Trigger point injections are used to decrease spasms by injecting steroids and a numbing agent directly into the affected muscle(s).
- TENS Units reduce muscle spasm by electric nerve stimulation. The unit is attached to the muscles outside of the mouth.
- Physical therapy addresses factors that contribute to the pain cycle. Stretching and exercises are utilized as well as modalities such as heat or cold therapy, ultrasound and massage.
- Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-anxiety medication, muscle relaxers, and in some cases, anti-depressants.
TMJ patients have been known to explore other options, such as:
- Chiropractic
- Massage therapy
- Biofeedback
- Nutrition and exercise
- Surgery
- Botox® injections
- Acupuncture
- Stress management techniques
Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not recognize TMJ as a true diagnosis and therefore will not pay for medical or dental treatment.
